11th Annual Industry Memorial Golf Classic

Once again, we were blessed with a beautiful fall day on Tuesday, October 2, 2012  for the 11th Annual Industry Memorial Golf Classic at the Blue Springs Golf Club in Acton, Ontario.

The event is held on behalf of the hardware and housewares industry and honours stalwarts from the industry who have recently passed away.

This year’s honourees included Bill Caldwell – founder of Moldex Limited and United Extrusions and member of the Industry Hall of Fame; Brayl Copp – former owner and president of Copp’s Buildall; Ed Hardison of Moldex Limited and former president of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH) from 1986 to 2002; and Stuart North – director of operations at Techtronics Industries Canada Inc.
As always, we also remembered our past honourees: Joseph Kuchar, Shelly Lush, Jack Pountney, Christof Vanooteghem, Ian Hay, Trygve Husebye, Bernie Carpenter, Don McDonald, Les Groves, Bob Hilton, Doug Straus, Mel Boshart, George Giles and Ed Barnes.

The informal and fun day allows family, friends and colleagues to reflect and honour these gentlemen through an afternoon of golf, followed by dinner and a silent auction that raises money for the CHHMA Scholarship Program.

2012 Honourees

Bill Caldwell:

Passed away in his 83rd year on November 11, 2011. Bill was born in Barrie and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1952 with a degree in chemical engineering. He started as an engineer with Monsanto before founding Moldex Limited, Canada’s largest toilet seat manufacturer, in Barrie in 1956 and United Extrusions, a flexible drainage pipe manufacturing company in Orangeville in 1968. Bill later sold both companies at the age of 60.

Bill was active in his community and served on many committees and boards over the years including: Chairman of the Royal Victoria Hospital Board of Directors, Chairman of the Building Committee for the Royal Victoria Hospital, President of the Barrie Rotary Club, Chairman and Acting President of Georgian College, Chairman of the Barrie YMCA Building Committee, Director of the Barrie Chamber of Commerce, Member of the Ontario Council of Regents, President of the Barrie Raceway and founding member of the “Barrie Old Boy’s Club.” He was a respected military historian and the first civilian member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute. Bill was inducted into the Hardware and Housewares Industry Hall of Fame in 2005.

Vaughn Crofford, President of the CHHMA, spoke about the careers and lives of Bill Caldwell and Brayl Copp.

Brayl Copp:

Passed away in this 79th year on June 20, 2012. Brayl was born in London, Ontario and fresh out of Ridley College joined the family business, Copp’s Buildall in 1952, becoming Owner and President in 1963. He oversaw the expansion of the company to four locations and 250 employees, enabling it to become one of the largest, independently owned building material retailers in Southwestern Ontario.

Brayl gave his time to many organizations and over the years has been a director and founder of several private, public and non-profit companies and organizations including: Director of Junior Achievement of London & District, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Commstar Ltd., D.H. Howden & Company Limited, Greenhill’s Corporation, Conklin & Garrett Limited, TigerTel Communications, Sifton Properties Limited, Millennium Downtown Corporation and Ridout Downtown Corporation. He was past President of the Canadian Builder’s Supply Association, the London Hunt & Country Club and St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation. Brayl believed strongly in giving back to his community. In 2002, he became Co-Chair of Mission Services of London Campaign of Compassion that successfully raised the funds needed to complete the new Men’s Mission on York St. in London. Brayl was inducted into the London Business Hall of Fame in 2005.

Ed Hardison:

Passed away on December 15, 2011. Ed was a mentor and friend to many including the young people at Grace Gospel and Caven Church Bolton and the many industry colleagues of Moldex Limited in Barrie and the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating where he served as President from 1986 to 2002. The CIPH has recently renamed the annual association golf tournament held during their AGM, the Ed Hardison Memorial Golf Tournament.

In his retirement years, Ed dedicated a great deal of his time and energy volunteering with young people, Habitat for Humanity, NOTL Palliative Care, Meals on Wheels, Chateau Gardens and the Grace Gospel Church.

Bryan Gilbart from Envirogard/Rainfresh Water Filters spoke about Ed's career both at Moldex and as President of the CIPH.

Ed's wife Annita pictured above with Bryan was always by Ed's side and we were pleased she could attend the evening's dinner.

Stuart North:

Passed away in his 50th year on November 11, 2011. Formerly of Sheffield, England, Stuart immigrated to Canada in 1993 and went to work for UPS as a Strategic Planner and Account Executive. When UPS acquired Livingston Inc. Supply Chain Solutions, Stuart took over as Senior Manager, Central Region of the company’s service parts logistics operations. After stints with Best Buy and Mevotech, in which he was hired to re-engineer their service repair and logistics operations, he joined Techtronics Industries Canada Inc. as Director of Operations.

Stuart worked closely with the CHHMA as part of the Canadian Electrical Stewardship Association (CESA) including development of the BC ElectroRecycle Small Appliance & Power Tool Recycling Program. Stuart is missed by his many colleagues at TTI and friends from the industry.

Patricia Noronha from Techtronics Industries Canada Inc. spoke about Stuart both inside and
outside of work.  Although his life was cut short, he lived a very fulfilled life and will be missed by his colleagues from TTI, several who were on hand to partake in the day.
