10th Annual Industry Memorial Golf Classic

It was a beautiful fall day on Tuesday, September 27, in Acton, Ontario as the 10th Annual Industry Memorial Golf Classic took place at the Blue Springs Golf Club.

Over one hundred golfers hit the links on this top quality course and enjoyed a sunny afternoon with colleagues and friends from the hardware and housewares industry.

While partaking in some friendly competition and comradery, it was also a time for those in attendance to remember some important friends from the industry who we have lost in the past few years. The most recent honourees included Joseph Kuchar (founder of Recochem Inc.), Sheldon (Shelly) Lush (former president & chairman of Supreme Aluminum Industries Ltd.), Jack Joseph Pountney (Proctor Silex, Shetland Lewyt, Hoover Company) and Christof Vanooteghem (LM2 Marketing, Imperial Manufacturing Group, UAP/NAPA).

Past honourees included Ian Hay, Trygve Husebye, Bernie Carpenter, Don McDonald, Les Groves, Bob Hilton, Doug Straus, Mel Boshart, George Giles and Ed Barnes. We were pleased that many former colleagues, friends and family were able to attend to help honour their memory.

Honourees

The CHHMA runs this event each fall on behalf of the hardware and housewares industry and it honours stalwarts from the industry who have passed away.

This year we remembered four gentlemen from the
industry:

Joseph Kuchar (founder of Recochem Inc.), Sheldon (Shelly) Lush (former president & chairman of Supreme Aluminum Industries Ltd.), Jack Joseph Pountney (Proctor Silex, Shetland Lewyt, Hoover Company) and Christof Vanooteghem (LM2 Marketing, Imperial Manufacturing Group, UAP/NAPA).

As well as past honourees:

Ian Hay, Trygve Husebye, Bernie Carpenter, Don McDonald, Les Groves, Bob Hilton, Doug Straus, Mel Boshart, George Giles and Ed Barnes.

Joseph Kuchar:

Passed away March 9, 2011, at the age of 94. Highly successful entrepreneur, industrialist and international trader, he epitomized the opportunity that Canada offers to immigrants across the world. Born in Austria, his early years were spent in Czechoslovakia, where he met his wife Maria and started his family. In 1951, Joseph brought his family from Europe to Montreal and founded Record Chemical Co. Inc., which was later renamed Recochem Inc. Over the following six decades, the Kuchar family and their long-serving team built the company into a respected multinational producer and packager of specialty chemicals. Mr. Kuchar was elected into the Hardware & Housewares Industry Hall of Fame in 2011.

Mike Wilson, General Manager, Recochem, Ontario spoke about Mr. Kuchar's career.

Sheldon (Shelly) Lush:

Passed away February 8, 2011, just before his 93rd birthday. Business pioneer and respected icon in the Canadian Housewares Industry. Shelly started at Supreme Aluminum Industries Ltd. as an apprentice tool maker right out of school in 1938 (it was known as Metal Stampings Ltd. back then). In 1960, was appointed President, a position he held until he was elected Chairman & CEO in 1972. He remained in that position until the company was sold in 1985. Under Shelly’s guidance, Supreme Aluminum Industires Ltd. grew from a modest metal stamping company to a leading Canadian manufacturer of stainless steel cookware. Mr. Lush was a past director and treasurer of the CHHMA and was elected into the Hardware & Housewares Industry Hall of Fame in 1987.

Howard Franklin spoke about having the pleasure of working for both Shelly Lush and Jack Pountney.

Jack Joseph Pountney:

Passed away September 24, 2010. Respected icon in the Canadian Housewares Industry. Jack began his career in the industry with the Hoover Company, and later moved to Shetland Lewyt. When the company merged with Proctor Silex, he went on to build a career spanning more than 30 years at Proctor Silex, the last 15 as President. Throughout his career, Jack was always a strong supporter of industry events and associations, such as the CHHMA and PAMA. Mr. Pountney was elected into the Hardware & Housewares Industry Hall of Fame in 1997.

Jack's son Rod spoke about his father's career in the industry.

Christof Vanooteghem:

Passed away September 19, 2010, at the age of 43. At the time, Christof was Vice-President at LM2 Marketing, managing the Ontario division. Prior to that, Christof worked at Imperial Manufacturing Group and UAP/NAPA. Christof supported many industry events and CHHMA activities and is missed by his many friends in the hardware and building material trade.

Jean-Luc Marcil of LM2 Marketing spoke about working with his former colleague and friend.
