8th Annual Industry Memorial Golf Classic

The 8th Annual Industry Memorial Golf Classic took place on September 29th at a new venue for the event - The Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ontario. The 90 golfers were greeted with a mixed bag of cool, breezy and partly rainy weather but the day spent playing this very enjoyable course with customers, friends and colleagues for an important cause made it all worthwhile.

A number of prizes were awarded for golf hole contests and draws. Pictured below are the lucky winners on the day.

In addition to remembering previous honorees: Les Groves, Bob Hilton, Doug Straus, Mel Boshart,George Giles and Ed Barnes; this year's Golf Classic was held in the honor of two well respected industry veterans who unfortunately passed away this summer and who will be missed - Mr. Don McDonald and Mr. Bernie Carpenter.

Don had a long and illustrious career in the hardware industry and was elected to the Industry Hall of Fame in 1996. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a Veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. Don was the founder and former president of McDonald Sales & Merchandising and was instrumental in the growth of Canadian companies such as Aqualine Products, Dundas-Jafine, Jamec, Imperial Sheet Metal and Valley Eastman.

Bernie started his career in the industry working at Guest Hardware in Toronto while going to school. In 1957 he joined Greer Roberts, a houseware and toy wholesaler where he worked as a salesman until 1960. Bernie then joined Sunbeam Appliance Corporation where he enjoyed many opportunities. In 1968, Bernie then partnered with John Needham working together until 1978 when he formed his own sales agency B.L. Carpenter Enterprises. Over the next 30 years the agency would flourish and today continues to grow in the hardware, sporting goods and electronics industries.

After golf, a dinner and silent auction was held which raised money for the CHHMA Scholarship Program which assists employees of our member companies with the cost of post-secondary education for their children. We would like to thank the numerous companies that donated items for the silent auction and all the individuals who made financial contributions on the bids.

Finally, we would like to thank the following Sponsors for their generosity and helping make this event such a success:
