CHHMA Spring Conference & AGM 2008

The results are in and our members are telling us that our 2008 Spring Conference and AGM was a great success. All of the sessions continue to be popular. Comments indicate that people feel it worthwhile to be able to attend seminars specific to their area of interest in smaller, more intimate sessions and also get the advantage of the more global aspects of the information provided by keynote speakers in the larger forums.

After the sessions there was an opportunity to meet up with colleagues and friends in a reception leading up to the Hall of Fame Dinner.

Day two was equally information rich with presentations from Mr. Don Drummond, VP and Chief Economist for TD Bank and Mr. Richard Worzel, a futurist and much sought international speaker. We also were delighted to hear from Mr. Don Stallings, President of Lowe's Canada. Who not only addressed the complete group but who also attended all of the sessions.

The Association's Annual General Meeting was held on April 2nd, 2007, at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Toronto, Ontario. Amongst the many items on the agenda was the election of new directors. We would like to welcome three new members to the Board, Mr. Dave McKellar of Masco Canada, Mr. Kris Ovstaas of Philips Lighting and Mr. Mike Wilson of Recochem. Below is a group photograph of our new Board. Missing from the group are Ms. Diane Gazzola, Mr. Dave McKellar and Mr. David Simmons who were unable to attend due to business commitments.

The Board and Staff of the CHHMA would like to thank Mr. Gerry Byle for the leadership, dedication and good judgement he has shown both as a Board member and as Chairman for the last year. Below, Gerry is being presented with a memento of his time as Chairman by Mr. Bill Calisina, the Board's incoming Chairman.

Our thanks also go to Mr. Michael Gentile and Mr. Sam Purdy both of whom did not stand for re-election.

We also would be remiss if we were not to mention our outgoing Past Chairman, Mr Jim Rotz. Jim, pictured below receiving his much coveted red jacket from Mr. Gerry Byle our new Past President, is owed a debt of gratitude by Board and staff of the CHHMA for his work on the board as member, Board Chairman and Past Chairman.

A Well Deserved Reward

There was a surprise at the end of the Annual General Meeting when one of our own was rewarded for her continuing contributions to the organization.

Maureen Hizaka, Director of Operations at the Canadian Hardware & Housewares Manufacturers Association, was presented with a gift to commemorate her service by Mr. Gerry Byle, Chairman of the Association.

Maureen has been with the Association for 20 years and has risen in responsibility and authority throughout that time. Her ability, experience and commitment are a large part of what makes the Association run as well as it does. Making the presentation, Gerry commented that not only is Maureen an esteemed and valued member of staff, but added, with a smile, that she is the person who keeps Association President, Vaughn Crofford, organized and on top of association business.

We'd like to add our congratulations to Maureen and wish her well in the future.
