CHHMA Spring Conference & AGM 2007

According to all the feedback we are getting the 2007 CHHMA Spring Conference & AGM was a resounding success. This is the second year of our new two day format and it seems to be a hit. Comments indicate that people feel it worthwhile to be able to attend seminars specific to their area of interest on day one and also get the advantage of the more global aspect of the information provided by keynote speakers on day two.

The first day started with a networking lunch followed by the seminars presented by an array of business speakers who provided in-depth presentations in their areas of expertise. We have had very positive feedback from these sessions and we will look to continue this format at future meetings. The best part for many of our member companies was being able to provide education for a much greater number of their employees through the use of one of the Conference packages. Most of these sessions were very well attended, some were packed out, but even those with small participation were well received by attendees for the content and the ability to be more one on one with the presenter.

After the sessions there was further opportunity to network and meet up with peers in the reception leading up to the Hall of fame Dinner.

The second day went equally well. Following a networking buffet breakfast we had three major presentations. The first was by Mr. Don Drummond, Senior Vice-President & Chief Economist for TD Bank, who again provided everyone with a presentation full of information for members. As always he provided a glimpse into the future, as seen by an expert economist, with insightful comment. Next we had Mr. Ken Wong, faculty member and the Commerce '77 Teaching Fellow in Marketing at Queen's School of Business, whose topic was "Your Next Big Thing: Profit-Making Marketing". Ken guided us through how to expose the major drivers of profitability and the ways marketing can impact on these, for better or for worse. After Mr. Wong's presentation we convened our Association Annual General Meeting and thereafter had an enjoyable lunch followed by our final speaker for the Conference, Mr. Ed Strapagiel. Mr. Strapagiel, an Executive Vice President with Kubas Consultants, discussed the major developments affecting the hardware and housewares markets, including consumer trends, retail competition, and marketing practices. He provided attendees with some ideas on what they can be doing today to get ready for tomorrow.

We believe this year's Conference brought value to our members and look forward to next year. Please do not hesitate to send us feedback on anything related to the event. Our intention is to continually improve how we do things and your feedback is an enormous help in that process.

The Association's Annual General Meeting was held on April 4th, 2007, at the Hilton Suites & Conference Centre in Markham, Ontario. Amongst the many items on the agenda was the election of new directors and a new Chairman of the Board.

The Board and Staff of the CHHMA would like to thank Mr. Jim Rotz for the leadership and dedication he has shown both as a Board member and as Chairman for the last year. To the right, Jim is being presented with a memento of his time as Chairman by Mr. Gerry Byle, the Board's incoming Chairman.

The Association by-laws cover the terms that can be served by a Board member. As a result of completing the third of three consecutive two year terms, Mr. Bryan Gilbart, a long time supporter of the Association and a well respected member of both the Association and our Industry as a whole is stepping down from the Board. On the right, Bryan is receiving the coveted red jacket from Wendy Hanson, immediate Past Chairman, who also has completed her term on the Board. Also pictured is Wendy being presented with her red jacket by Jim Rotz, Past Chairman of the Board.

The Board and Staff thank both Wendy and Bryan for their contributions throughout the years.

The Board and Staff also extend a warm welcome to three new members of the Board of Directors. They are Ms. Mary Houston of Anchor Hocking Canada, Mr. Craig Emmerson of Applica Canada Corporation and Mr. Peter Thomson of Taymor Industries. .
