CHHMA Spring Conference & Annual General Meeting 2006

The results are in and we have determined that this year's Spring Conference gets an overall grade of "A". We were thinking "A plus" but the planning committee felt that, while everything went well, there are some changes we can make to improve things for next year.

The two day format was definitely the biggest change from 2005 and it looks like this was one of the best decisions made by the committee. It enabled members to send much larger numbers to the break-out seminars than would have previously been the case. The feedback we received from these sessions was very positive. Some were packed out, but even those with lower turn-out were praised by attendees for the content and the ability to be more one on one with the presenter. These will definitely feature in next year's event.

After the sessions there was the opportunity to network and meet up with peers in the reception leading up to the Hall of Fame Dinner.

The second day was equally well received. Following a networking buffet breakfast we had three major presentations. The first, by Mr. Don Drummond, Senior Vice-President & Chief economist for TD Bank, was chock full of information for members. It allowed everyone to gaze into the crystal ball of world and Canadian economies, with an expert providing insightful comment. Next, we had Dr. Tony Hernandez, Director of the Eaton Chair in Retailing at Ryerson University. His presentation provided members with an in-depth look at retailing trends in Canada and how they are changing. The depth of statistical data and analysis was outstanding. The final presentation was given by CHHMA President, Mr. Vaughn Crofford, who provided an in-depth discourse covering all aspects of packaging stewardship activity across Canada.

The Association Annual General Meeting followed the presentations after which lunch was enjoyed by all of the attendees.

Based upon the feedback we received over the two days, and subsequent comments received since, the Conference was a rich and rewarding event for our members. Please do not hesitate to send us feedback on anything related to the event. It can only help improve how we do things in coming years. We look forward to next year with great anticipation.

                                                                  K- Promotions Winners

Brian Gravenor of K-Promotions, who had a table top display in the Conference Centre lobby, has informed us that the winners of the business card draw were Gerry Byle of Kaz, Glenn Beattie of Magtar Sales and Sam Purdy of Ryobi. Each will be receiving a barbecue set from Brian, who also thanks everyone for their participation in the draw.

                                                                 Annual General Meeting

The Association's Annual General Meeting was held on March 29th, 2006, at the Hilton Suites & Conference Centre in Markham,Ontario. Amongst the many items on the agenda was the election of new directors and a new Chairman of the Board. The Board and Staff of the CHHMA owe a large debt of gratitude to Past Chairman, Wendy Hanson. She was an outstanding chairman who used her many skills to the advantage of the Association and the members. In the picture to the right, Wendy passes the ceremonial gavel to Jim Rotz, our incoming Chairman.

                                                               Industry Hall of Fame Dinner

Over 130 people attended the Industry Hall of Fame Dinner, honouring the late Jean Gagliardi and David Grubbe. It was a marvelous event and everyone was delighted to see Mr. Grubbe and his family and the Gagliardi family in attendance. Mr. Mark Gagliardi, on his father and family's behalf and Mr. Grubbe were equally eloquent in accepting the awards, with both men very obviously touched by the honour.

The awards, which this year were presented by CHHMA President, Vaughn Crofford and Chairman, Wendy Hanson, are given to individuals in the Industry who have built successful enterprises and whose outstanding achievement, service and contribution to the Canadian hardware and housewares industry has been recognized through nomination by their peers.

Both of these gentlemen not only met this criteria, but surpassed it by far, through their work and contributions to the Industry throughout their very successful business careers.

The evening's master of ceremonies was Mr. Rod Black, of CTV and TSN Sports, who did an exceptional job. He both entertained the audience and effectively kept the evening on track with a mixture of humour and a very clear understanding of the honour being bestowed. The guest speaker for the Dinner was Ms. Cheryl Pounder, a five time world champion and two time Olympic Gold Medalist, who held everyone in thrall as she detailed her journey of ultimate success through adversity in women's international hockey.

After the formal event both Ms. Pounder and Mr. Black remained to chat with attendees and provide some photo opportunities. A big hit was holding Olympic Gold Medals which Ms. Pounder had brought along with her to the event.
